What is Equal Pay Day?
Equal Pay Day is a symbolic day each year that recognizes how far into the year a woman must work in order to be paid the same amount as a man from the previous year. The date changes each year based on the previous year’s statistics, but it is traditionally recognized at some point during March. This year, Equal Pay Day will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. Equal Pay Day was created by the National Committee on Pay Equity in 1996 in order to bring awareness to the issue of the pay gap that exists between men and women in society. While this gap is still large and there is still much more work left to do in order to close it, the pay gap that exists for women of color is even more troubling. For example, this year, National Black Women’s Equal Pay Day will be held even later in the year on September 21, 2023, while Latina Women’s Equal Pay Day is not held until October 8, 2023, to represent the length of time it would take into the year for women of color to be paid the same amount as a white man from the previous year.
We will be recognizing each of these dates at Clear-Salary.com. How will you be observing them?
